Electricity and solar statistics by state

The key numbers on what U.S. homes pay for power and how rooftop solar pays off, for all 50 states and D.C. Every figure comes from official U.S. government data and is free to use with a link back.

Key statistics

  1. 01

U.S. homes paid an average of 18.31¢ per kWh for electricity in July 2026, up 4.9% from a year earlier.

  2. 02

Hawaii had the most expensive residential electricity at 48.00¢/kWh, 2.6× the national average.

  3. 03

Louisiana had the cheapest residential electricity at 12.72¢/kWh — 74% less than Hawaii.

  4. 04

19 of 51 states (including D.C.) paid more than the U.S. average residential price.

  5. 05

Residential prices rose year over year in 45 of 51 states; the biggest increase was in Hawaii (+22.0%).

  6. 06

At state average prices, 900 kWh of electricity costs from $114 in Louisiana to $432 in Hawaii.

  7. 07

Homes paid 18.31¢/kWh on average, versus 14.53¢ for businesses and 9.77¢ for industry.

  8. 08

Each kW of south-facing rooftop solar produces about 1,779 kWh a year in New Mexico, the sunniest state in our data, versus 922 kWh in Alaska.

  9. 09

For an example home (7 kW system at $3,000/kW, 10,500 kWh/yr home, full net metering with annual true-up, no incentives), solar pays back fastest in Hawaii (4.1 years) and pays back within 10 years in 14 of 51 states.
