Common questions

How do I calculate my electricity cost?

Multiply the kWh you use by your price per kWh. For example, 900 kWh at 15¢ per kWh is $135. The EIA state averages used here already include taxes and fees, spread across every kWh sold. Your own bill depends on your utility's rates: fixed monthly charges weigh more if you use little power.

Where do these prices come from?

They are the average residential prices per state from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), July 2026. Recent months are preliminary and may be revised. Your utility's rate can be higher or lower.

How many kWh does a home use in a month?

It depends on the size of the home, the climate, heating and cooling, and appliances. Your electric bill shows your exact monthly use; use that number for the most accurate estimate.

Thinking about cutting the bill with solar? Try the solar payback calculator or see electricity rates by state.

Source: U.S. EIA, Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, residential sector, July 2026. EIA derives these prices by dividing utility revenue (including taxes and fees) by kWh sold.
